Inspired by a book of collected poems, printed in 1966, by Martin Kesamaa and designed by H. Laretei with relief-printed illustrations.
Publisher Jo Cook (Perro Verlag) purchased a copy of this book in Tallinin during a residency there. Finding it in her studio inspired us to produce a contemporary artist book in response to this beautiful piece of printed matter.

Library Derives 1-4, 2003-2005, re-issued 2013 for LIBRO
letterpress and laser printing, open edition sets of 4, 4.5” x 7” booklets
The practice of the ‘dérive’ was developed by the Situationist International as a way to travel through and experience the city. I applied their technique of non-predestinated but focused wandering to the library catalog. The resulting writing relates the information I gleaned and charts my erratic path through the texts of the library.

A gnomon is the object on a sundial that casts the shadow and thereby marks the hour. In Greek, it means 'interpreter' or 'one who discerns'.
The text comes from Margaret Scott Gatty's The Book of Sun-Dials, a thorough compendium of mottoes found on sundials located throughout Europe and the United Kingdom and published in London by Chiswick Press in 1872. The images of urban gnomons were collected in Reno, Nevada in 2008.
